Orthodontic treatment of open bite involved in diffuse hypercementosis

BackgroundOpen bite is considered one of the most complicated malocclusions in orthodontic treatment. In this study, authors successfully treated total open involved hypercementosis using miniscrews.Case DescriptionA woman aged 25 years 8 months had bite. Her occlusal contact at maximum intercuspation was present right second molars. A panoramic radiograph showed diffuse hypercementosis. The titanium miniscrews were interradicullay implanted between first and molars, intrusion force applied for 14 months. After active treatment, patient’s maxillary molars about 1.6-millimeters intrusion, resulting counterclockwise mandibular rotation. acceptable occlusion maintained after 1.0-year retention.Practical ImplicationsMiniscrews might be useful tool to improve malocclusion though they are difficult move brought on ankylosis.
